Looking At The Lucid Dream

'Lucid dream' a term whose derivation can be owed to the Dutch writer, Frederik van Eeden, means a dream where the individual is very well aware of the fact that it is just a dream. After the person starts dreaming, all of a sudden, in the middle, he or she begins to understand that it is all a dream, and not reality. As we can see, this is not what happens in most dreams.

Lucid dreams are generally classified into two broad forms: a 'dream-initiated lucid dream' and a 'wake-initiated lucid dream'. The first one is the more natural or common type, in which the person is sleeping, and then gets a lucid dream, and slowly realizes that he, is experiencing one. The second one is not that common. In this, the person is initially awake, but then unexpectedly, gets into a bizarre dream-like state.

The concept of lucid dreaming thus simply implies becoming aware of the fact that one is dreaming. The quality of clarity or lucidity of the dream can be different. In a high-level lucid dream, the dreamer is fully aware that everything that he is experiencing is taking place in his sub-conscious. He has no fear of danger, and he knows that he will soon wake up. But in a low-level lucid dream, this might not happen. The dreamer here might not understand that the people he is interacting with, are in his dream, or that he is in no danger.

Lucid dreaming and dream control are not related to each other. The two are not connected as it is generally thought to be. The dreamer might be aware that he or she is dreaming, but still have no amount of control over the content of the dream. The reverse might also take place. The dreamer could have a lot of control over his dream, without being aware of the fact it is actually a dream.

But it can be said, that a lucid dream increases the chances of dream control. This implies that when a person is experiencing a lucid dream, his chances of controlling the content of the dream increases. It usually happens that in such dreams, the dreamer tries to do things that he or she cannot do otherwise in reality, like the act of flying.

It is usually assumed that a lucid dream is not something that has been accepted by science. But this is not the truth. Experts and scientists have undertaken a lot of research in this field. And in this respect we can mention the eminent scientist Allan Hobson, who has shown us a 'neurophysiologic' way of studying and analyzing dreams. And with this, the amount of mistrust, disbelief and speculation that lucid dreams were subject to, has decreased.

Lucid dreams are not a new concept. It was always there in ancient mythology, and philosophy, especially in the eastern and South-east Asian civilizations. We have found evidence of lucid dreams going back to the 8th century. These sorts of dreams were often used by the Tibetan and Buddhist monks. There is a concept in yoga similar to this, which is called dream yoga. But it is not that only the East used this idea. Even people living in western have often utilized the concept of a lucid dream.

The possibility of getting a 'high', that is, experiencing something exhilarating and out-of-the-world, is what pulls most people towards lucid dreaming. Research has shown that, in a lucid dream, people like to do extra-ordinary things, e.g., flying. Lucid dreaming also has therapeutic properties. It can cure people who tend to have horrible nightmares.

It is true that some people are born with an inherent talent for lucid dreaming. But this does not mean that others cannot make use of this wonderful concept. Through proper training and guidance, anybody can experience a lucid dream; and the ones who are lucky enough to be born with the skill, can learn how to make the best use of it.
